June 14, 2022, Brussels, Belgium / SUNER-C stakeholders kick-off meeting and SUNERGY initiative continuation.

I am glad to have joined an EU-wide initiative to promote combined chemical and engineering solutions to harnessing CO2 conversion to useful chemicals and fuels at the Palace of the Academies. My role this time around was to group “Novel business models”. As always, the main issue was to define on what we should focus on. I think all the participants have agreed that one has no other way but to “aim big” at large-scale processes. I was glad to see that many of the major industrial players have chosen to take an active part in this field.

In the case of Estonia, it means converting the wind power to renewable e-chemicals and e-fuels, a need we still ought to address. Unfortunately, the CEU and the Baltics were represented to a lesser extent.

This time thanks to the cooperation of Eesti Kaubandus-Tööstuskoda (the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and the Czech Embassy in Tallinn, Estonia

Building fruitful co-working teams and ensuring successful applications do take their time in planning and finding the common grounds.

May 09, 2022, Alicante, Spain / ERASMUS+ Research Staff Exchange with the University of Alicante

In May, Pavel had an amazing to have joined the Institute of Electrochemistry of the University of Alicante. This exchange was part-funded by the EU-wide ERASMUS+ staff exchange programme for the university staff [TalTech internal link]. Albeit it does involve lots of paperwork and coordination, it was an excellent opportunity for the TalTech staff to exchange and gain new experiences! NB. The COVID-restrictions were still in place in Spain in May 2022 in public spaces!

I was hosted by an excellent host Associate Professor José Solla-Gullón, which makes it a key!, and his dedicated students at Parque Cientifico de Alicante. Aside the in-depth RDI discussions and inscursions , I was exposed to the pre-pilot and pilot facilities, which, hopefully, will take our basic lab research and endeavours a scale up to chemical and mechanical engineering!

Doing things does get one excited!

February 22, 2022, Tallinn, Estonia / CO2 reduction to formate on an affordable bismuth metal-organic framework based catalyst

In a latest installment we have shown that new TL-1 is useful as a single carbon/nitrogen/oxygen-source for a bismuth(0) material for CO2 reduction. This paves a way for new fruitful collaborations in the nearest future!

Together with Mrs Ella Ivantsova, an exchange PhD student from the Ukraine, we showcased the chemistry and the solutions behind the COVID-related grant: Biodegradable formulations for antiviral coatings and sanitizers awarded by Estonian Research Council.

May 17, 2021 / Multi-purpose heterogeneous catalyst material from an amorphous cobalt metal–organic framework

Simply put, we have designed a heterogenous catalyst, which performs very well both for various electrochemical and chemocatalytic applications. For the first time in chemical catalysis, we were able to show the so-far unattainable carbon-carbon coupling reactions.

We have leant how to modify shungite, a carbon-rich raw material, for high performance in oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions.

Rohit Bhadoria, a graduate student of Biomedicine and Biotechnology Graduate School and Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology Kefeng Ping passed his PhD viva with a thesis “Design of Heterobivalent Molecules and their Applications in Chemical Biology and Materials Science”

Pavel was selected by the Estonian Chemistry Society for the 10th EuEUCheMS YIW workshop hosted by Prof Véronique Gouverneur at Oxford, UK. A compelementary invited research communication was later published in Synlett 2019.
